1953 Rolex
Vintage Wristwatch
Ref. 6022
If you’re looking for a handsome and immaculate vintage stainless steel cased Rolex, then congratulations, you’ve found your “new” watch! This classic gem has a very nice stainless case, which is not overpolished, and still retains some sharpness on the bottom edges and around the lugs.
The very clean silver dial looks fantastic, and is adorned by gold Arabic Numerals at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10, with golden arrows at 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11, with the iconic Rolex crown perfectly positioned at 12. To complete the dial, there are round lume plots at 2, 4, 6 8 and 10. Aligned below the 12 o’clock “crown” marker, the words “ROLEX” and “OYSTER” appear. The hands also appear to be original and have retained nearly all (99% ) of the factory lume. An added bonus is that the original blue steeled second hand is still in tact, which, often times Rolex removed and replaced with “new” hands to freshen up the appearance.
As mentioned above, the stainless-steel case is in good condition, with no major marring or scratching. The lugs and case edges still have nice sharp angles. The caseback is also very clean for its age, free of major blemishes. All of the caseback “teeth” have plenty of depth for grip and are not stripped out, as is often the case on these older Rolex models. On the inside of the caseback you’ll find the Rolex log, as well as “6022”, designating the reference number. Between the top lugs, you’ll also find “6022” and under the bottom lugs, you'll find the serial number which dates the watch to 1953.
Inside of the case you'll find it’s heart and soul, a vintage 17 jewel patented “Super Balance” Rolex Caliber 710. A big of a history lesson – The Rolex 710 was (as were most all non chronograph Rolex movements) Aegler produced, which means that this is identical to the Gruen 872 and Alpina 872SS.
This movement was serviced at the end of November 2022, which included a new mainspring. This manual wind movement is running along just as it should and is ready to be enjoyed for many years to come.
To round out the rest of the details, a new crystal was fitted at the time the watch was serviced. The case is currently fitted with a vintage, period correct NOS 19mm Lizard leather strap.
